There is a lot more to do outside than just go for hikes and take in the nature. There are many outdoor adventures and activities where you interact with the environment, and in my opinion these can be some of the most fun ones. Fishing is one of those activities. Fishing is one of my favorite things to do in my free time, and even when you aren’t catching anything it’s just so relaxing feeling the sun slowly warm you along with the gentle sway of the boat as you take a sip of a nice cold drink. It just makes it easy to reach complete bliss and push anything out of your head in a therapeutic manner. On the other hand it is even better when you are out on a boat in the ocean going for big fish that will actually put up a fight. Fishing in the ocean is very different than in a lake or river. It is also usually an all day event, so when we go we bring a cooler full of drinks and foods. We make a big trip and adventure out of it, because the best way to live is making everything an adventure.
When you are fishing in the ocean you have to use bigger hooks, and you need to use bigger bait. Typically when we go we take a dead fish and put it on the hook. Once the boat stops you hold your pole over the water and flick a button to start letting line out, but you need to keep pressure on the line with your thumb making sure to let out line slowly.
After letting out line you feel a slight tap and you quickly real up a little. The tap is the bottom of the ocean and you need to real up so you don’t get stuck. Typically when you first get it off the bottom you will feel a quick hard pull on the line. This is when the real fun starts. You need to slowly fight the fish, but make sure it doesn’t get away. After a long fight the fish will typically breach the water near the boat. Then you need to get them alongside the boat and net it. One year we got extremely lucky off the coast of block island while we were striper fishing and caught our limit within a half hour of being on the water. Since fishing is so diverse in the area we were able to continue fishing for fluke, flounder, porgy, and black sea bass all day. The entire day we were just getting hit after hit catching a variety of fish. Another great place to fish is off of the coast of Connecticut. Every year that we go there we don’t always catch our limit of striper, but we catch a surplus of blue fish. At the end of every trip we make sure to fillet the fish off the back off the boat and watch as all the birds trail us and dive bomb through the surface of the water to get our scraps, but sometimes you have the few who will grab the fish right out of the air.
